Leary’s first experiment was the Harvard Psilocybin Project (HPP), wherein he invited creative intellectuals to Cambridge to take psychedelic magic mushrooms chart drugs and document their experiences. Many important writers, musicians, and intellectuals participated in the HPP, including Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky, William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Arthur Koestler, Robert Lowell, Charles Olson, Maynard Ferguson, and Alan Watts. Their ex post facto reports document psilocybin’s ability to foster creativity. Many of Leary’s findings are included in two of his earliest academic articles on creativity: How to Change Behavior (chapter 1 of this book) and Psychedelic Drugs and Creativity (chapter 4).
